PREVENTING VIOLENT EXTREMISM

Trust2Peace: Building Trust and Cohesion to Reduce the Risk of Violent Extremism in Northern Ghana

I am currently directing a USAID activity that aims to reduce the risk of both communal conflict and terrorist group recruitment in northern Ghana. Working in 20 hotspot communities, we rely on sports events, women's groups, and civic education activities that bring together competing factions to build trust overcome threats to community cohesion.

Community-based Policing and the Prevention of Violent Extremism in Benin

From 2018 to 2023, I directed a State Department-funded program that aimed to reduce the threat of extremism in Benin by improving information sharing between border police agents and the communities they serve.

Terrorism and Democracy in Africa

In this project with Trey Billing, we use a spatio-temporal matching strategy to evaluate the effects of terrorist attacks on democratic preferences. We find that terrorist attacks undermine both satisfaction with democracy and victims' demand for democracy. Working paper; please email for details.
